Our Literacy Program
We are very excited about our research-based literacy program. It is composed of three components: Making Meaning, Being a Writer, and Vocabulary.
Making Meaning is the comprehension piece of the program. With the use of a wide variety of read aloud books, basic reading strategies are modeled by the teacher and practiced by the students. So far we have practiced good reader strategies such as: checking for understanding, making connections with the text, recognizing text features in expository text, asking questions, and recognizing story elements (character, plot, setting, conflict, resolution). We also spend at least thirty minutes a day in independent reading.
We are now publishing our first book in Being a Writer. We are using our keyboarding skills as we create our masterpieces!
